The In-N-Out Level System Explained (Level 1 to Level 7)

In-N-Out Burger is famous for paying its employees significantly higher wages than the industry average. But they don’t just hand you a top-tier salary on day one.
In-N-Out uses a strict, gamified promotion track known as the Level System. Every Associate starts at the bottom, and you can only earn raises by passing specific tests and mastering new stations. Here is the exact roadmap from entry-level to Store Manager.
Level 1: The Foundation
Every new hire starts as a Level 1 Associate.
- Your Job: You are strictly confined to the dining room, the cleanup sink, and taking out the trash.
- The Goal: To get promoted to Level 2, you must demonstrate intense cleanliness, learn the company’s culture, and prove you have a positive, outgoing attitude.
Level 2 to Level 4: The Front of House
- Level 2 (Order Taker): You are finally allowed to interact with customers. You master the POS system, take counter orders, and learn the Secret Menu.
- Level 3 (Fries): You move to the back of the house. You learn how to peel, dice, wash, and cook the fresh-cut french fries to exact color and texture specifications.
- Level 4 (Drive-Thru / Pay Window): You handle the intense speed of the drive-thru, taking payment and organizing the massive influx of cars without making errors.
Level 5 to Level 7: The Master Cooks and Management
This is where the big money starts, but the tests become incredibly difficult.
- Level 5 (Board): You are not cooking the meat yet, but you are dressing the buns. You must perfectly apply the spread, lettuce, tomatoes, and wrap the finished burgers at lightning speed.
- Level 6 (The Grill): This is the holy grail for Associates. You are finally cooking the meat. To pass your Level 6 certification, you must be able to cook, flip, and pull rows of burgers perfectly without burning a single patty during a massive rush.
- Level 7 (Management / Shift Manager): At Level 7, you are essentially a Shift Lead. You manage the labor, the cash, and handle customer complaints. From here, you are eligible to enter the Store Management program, where salaries can eventually top $100,000 a year.
